This record contains data collected from the near-water surface sampling site off the Lucinda Jetty, as part of the Lucinda Jetty Coastal Observatory. Sample collection began the 9th of January, 2014. The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation. Parameters measured include the absorption coefficients of the particulate and dissolved components of the water column and the phytoplankton pigment concentration and composition.

Chlorophyll a is the most commonly used indicator of phytoplankton biomass and is a proxy for primary productivity in the marine environment. It is relatively simple and cost effective to measure when compared to phytoplankton abundance and is thus routinely included in many surveys. Here we collate 173,333 records of chlorophyll a collected since 1965 from Australian waters gathered from researchers, from regular coastal monitoring surveys to long ocean voyages. This dataset concentrates on samples analysed using spectrophotometry, fluorometry and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Australian Chlorophyll a database is freely available through the Australian Ocean Data Network portal (http://imos.aodn.org.au/). These data can be used in isolation as an index of phytoplankton biomass or in combination with other data to provide insight into water quality, ecosystem state, and / or the relationships with other trophic levels such as zooplankton or fish.

This record describes fluorescence data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. The data were obtained from an SeaTech fluorometer lowered through the water shortly after completing a CTD cast from which chlorophyll and productivity samples were taken, at a range of depths (surface to 1500 meters) on 4 cruises of FRV "Southern Surveyor" on three 60 km transects across the continental shelf to the south and south-east of Tasmania in July 1991 (cruise SS 02/91), February 1992 (cruise SS 01/92), November 1992 (cruise SS 04/92) and April 1993 (cruise SS 03/93).

This dataset contains the results from algal bloom surveys in the Swan River, Perth, Western Australia. Aeroplane flights were used to map the extent of the blooms and at the same time, sea truthing of the images were made using an analysis for various pigments and obtaining phytoplankton samples. Four flight periods were made between October 1994 and December 1995, with up to 4 flights a day. The main species studied was the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium.

This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on Linnaeus voyage LI2014_V04. Voyage Title: IMOS mooring deployment and Rottnest Reference Station Monitoring The voyage took place on the 19th March 2014 from Hillarys (WA) to the Perth Canyon and return to Hillarys (WA) to recover two moorings and deploy two IMOS CTDs. The Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from this research voyage includes: NAV, Thermosalinograph (Seabird TSG 45) and fluorometer data. NAV data includes GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements of latitude, longitude, ship's direction and speed. Data are stored at 1 second intervals (NetCDF format) and both 10 second 5 minute intervals (.csv format). Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the data processing report for this voyage.

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Sciences and Technology (JAMSTEC) sponsored this research cruise - a circumnavigation of the Southern hemisphere using the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) Hydrographic Program (WHP) lines in the southern hemisphere to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its establishment. The research cruise was named "BEAGLE 2003" (Blue EArth GLobal Expedition 2003) and was carried out on RV MIRAI. This is a subset of the Beagle 2003 data set and contains the HPLC pigment and particulate absorption coefficient data collected on leg 3, between Valparaiso, Chile and Santos, Brazil from the 20 Oct to 25 Oct 2003. The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation. Parameters measured on the leg are the concentration of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments and the absorption coefficent for particulate (a/p) components of the water column. Samples were collected at 11 stations. The data was used primarily to validate ocean colour sensors MERIS, MODIS and SeaWIFs and the SST sensor AATSR. Samples were collected and analysed for pigments and absorption coefficient, particulate.

The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation. Parameters measured on the leg are the concentration of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments and the absorption coefficent for particulate (a/p) components of the water column. Samples were collected at 40 stations. The data was used primarily to validate ocean colour sensors MERIS, MODIS and SeaWIFs and the SST sensor AATSR. Samples were collected and analysed for pigments and absorption coefficient, particulate.

The Huon Estuary Study was undertaken by CSIRO Marine Research between 1996 and 1998. The Huon Estuary is in South Eastern Tasmania. This record references the data from the Physical Snapshot (PS) surveys. See the Documentation Link below in this record for an overview of all the surveys undertaken in this survey. The Physical Snapshot surveys were carried out on the day before a number of the Spatial (HES) surveys as follows: PS01 was undertaken directly before HES4 PS02 before HES5 PS03 before HES6 PS04 before HES9 and PS05 before HES10. These surveys were a combination of quickly deployed ctd's at a number of the Spatial Survey stations plus deployment of an underway data collecting system. For Physical Snapshots Surveys 3(PS03), 4(PSO4) & 5(PS05) only the underway system was deployed. From PS03 onwards data was collected by the underway system at nominally 0.5 and 1 m depths.

The Huon Estuary Study was undertaken by CSIRO Marine Research between 1996 and 1998. The Huon Estuary is in South Eastern Tasmania. This record references the autonomous profilers which were deployed as part of the Huon Estuary Study. The profilers operated at two locations, Killala and Hideaway Bays. At both sites conductivity, temperature, fluorescence, underwater light, dissolved oxygen and par sensors were deployed as well as a wind sensor at Killala Bay. For a number of parameters the raw data was processed using calibration co-efficients and converted to engineering units. The processed profile data is stored as daily, monthly and also as a dataset for duration of the deployment.
