    Sea surface temperature data, in 1, 3, 6, 10 and 15 day composite periods, at approximately 4 km resolution processed from NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data received at Australian Stations and transformed to the stitched archive (see related record). Temporal coverage of the data is from October 1993-June 2003 and will be extended backwards and forwards through time. The data are in netCDF files and can be viewed as graphics or downloaded as data files from http://www.marine.csiro.au/remotesensing/oceancurrents/

    ESRI grids showing sea salinity, linearly interpolated from CARS2000 mean and seasonal fields to 0.1 degree spaced grid, at depths of 0, 150, 500, 1000 and 2000 metres. The loess filter used to create CARS2000 resolves at each point a mean value and a sinusoid with 1 year period (and in some cases a 6 month period sinusoid - the "semi-annual cycle".) The provided "annual amplitude" is simply the magnitude of that annual sinusoid. CARS is a set of seasonal maps of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate, generated using Loess mapping from all available oceanographic data in the region. It covers the region 100-200E, 50-0S, on a 0.5 degree grid, and on 56 standard depth levels. Higher resolution versions are also available for the Australian continental shelf. The data was obtained from the World Ocean Atlas 98 and CSIRO Marine and NIWA archives. It was designed to improve on the Levitus WOA98 Atlas, in the Australian region. CARS2000 is derived from ocean cast data, which is always measured above the sea floor. However, for properties which do not change rapidly near the sea floor, this would not lead to a significant error. All the limitations of CARS2000 also apply here.

    Sea surface temperature data, in DISIMP images, from NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data received at Australian Stations including ACRES (Alice Springs), WASTAC (Perth), Australian Institute of Marine Science (Townsville), CSIRO Marine Laboratories (Hobart), CSIRO Atmospheric Research (Melbourne) and Bureau of Meteorology (Darwin). Potentially overlapping data from each station was consolidated ("stitched") into a single, Australia-wide image per satellite overpass by the CSIRO/Earth Observation Centre, from various NOAA satellites with both day and night passes. Data spans from October 1993 to June 2003. SST is calculated using the NLSST (non-linear SST) algorithm or the split window (McMillin) algorithm. The images cover the Australian continent and surrounding oceans. The data are contained on magnetic tape in Hobart.

    This data set contains mapped and gridded data from TOPEX/Poseidon (NASA/CNES), Jason-1 (CNES/NASA) and from ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat (ESA). At any given time data from all available satellites is included in the mapped and gridded data product. At times only data for TOPEX/Poseidon is available. This is indicated in one of the fields in the data file. Up to about mid-2003 the data is from TOPEX/Poseidon and ERS-1/2. The next generation of satellites (Jason-1 and Envisat) take over after that. The data is on a 1/3rd degree Mercator grid - the longitude grid spacing is always 1/3rd degree. The latitude grid spacing is 1/3rd of a degree at the equator, but gets smaller with distance from the equator. This data set is in a relatively easy to use format. The data was provided by Aviso/CNES in France and has been reformatted into a netCDF file at CSIRO Marine Research in Hobart. Available on-line on the CSIRO Marine Research network; also available to outside users on request.

    Drift bottles and drift cards are two of the oldest methods used to trace ocean currents. Drift bottles were were released by CSIRO's division of Fisheries and Oceanography from various locations along Australia's eastern coast between 1938-40, and off Western Australia between 1954-57. Drift cards have been released from various locations around Australia, and off South Africa since about 1969. The PDF documents under the links section contain most of the information available via the Datacentre, No raw data is associated with this record.

    Raw data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors on NOAA polar orbiting satellites, received at the Met Bureau's Darwin Satellite Reception Facility. These data are used later for computation of parameters such as sea surface temperature (SST). The data start from August 1992. The dataset contains approx. 4600 satellite passes as at Oct. 1998. The data are stored on Exabyte tapes in Hobart.
