This record describes gravity data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2020_V06, titled "Probing the Australian-Pacific Plate Boundary: Macquarie Ridge in 3-D." The voyage took place between October 8 and November 1, 2020 departing from Hobart (TAS) and arriving in Hobart (TAS). The gravity meter instrument is a MicroG Lacoste Air-Sea II. Data are stored in .ENV and .DAT data files at CSIRO. There are 26 files totalling 425 MB of raw data in this dataset. Wharf tie[s] were undertaken at Hobart Princes Wharf No.4 location using a Scintrex Autograv CG-5. Wharf tie data can be found in "Hobart wharf_tie_2020_11_02.TXT", which is stored with the raw data. Sea surface temperature data, in "Serov" DISIMP images, from Advanced High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data received at the Hobart station. The AVHRR is mounted on the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. Data starts from July 1991. The images cover the "BIGTAS" area, which is bounded by Serov coordinates 14801,8922,15801,9922. The data are contained on CDROMs in Hobart.
The CSIRO archive of Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station - Hourly Atmospheric Radon (Rn222) concentration datasets. The Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station facility, located at the North/West tip of Tasmania (40° 41'S, 144° 41'E), is funded and managed by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, with the scientific program being jointly supervised with CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research. The role of the station has been to observe global air quality through the measurements of atmospheric pollution such as carbon dioxide, ozone, halocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, particulates, precipitation chemistry as well as to monitor other parameters such as solar radiation and meteorological variables. This archive contains measurements of atmospheric concentrations of the colorless, naturally occurring, radioactive noble gas Radon (Rn222), that is formed from the decay of radium gas as part of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation's (ANSTO) Cape Grim Radon Program. Containing measured atmospheric Radon concentrations for the period from Dec 1986 until Dec 2004. Variable data is available as both an hourly averaged annual file or as a single (all years concatenated) file in Asci (.dat) format with Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) time and date formats within each file (Concentrations in calibrated one hour long counts).
Sea surface temperature images (SST) from Advanced High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites are combined with drifter buoy data to create animations showing buoy movements on the changing SST field. The data are contained on one CDROM in Hobart.
This record describes scientific split-beam echosounder data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_T01, 'Continuity of Australian terranes into Zealandia: towards a geological map of the east Gondwana margin' which departed Lautoka on the 30th June 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 14th July 2016. The Simrad EK60 split beam echosounders 12, 18, 38, 70, 120, 200 and 333 kHz were used to acquire acoustic backscatter data to a range of 500 - 2200 m, around Lord Howe Rise and North Loyalty Basin. All frequencies were logged continuously/sporadically for the extent of the voyage. The frequencies were set to passive during the voyage. Data are stored in *.raw, *.bot and *.idx format at CSIRO. There are 1764 files totalling 64.7 GB of raw data in this dataset. No processing has been conducted on this data. This record describes scientific split-beam echosounder data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_T02, transit from Hobart to Sydney which departed Hobart on the 25 August 2016 and arrived in Sydney on the 29 August 2016. The Simrad EK60 split beam echosounders 18, 38, 70 120, 200 and 333 kHz were used to acquire acoustic backscatter data to a maximum range of 1500 m, between Hobart and Sydney. All frequencies were logged continuously for the extent of the transit. Data are stored in *.raw, *.bot and *.idx format at CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere. There are 432 lines totaling 10.1 GB of raw data in this dataset. No processing has been conducted on this data. This record describes multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_E01, 'East Tasman Plateau – key to unravelling the onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current/MNF Equipment Sea Trials,' which departed Hobart on the 17 August 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 22 August 2016. The Kongsberg EM710 MKII multibeam echosounder was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry and backscatter information between Hobart and the Cascade Seamount. The EM710 MKII provides a 0.5° by 1° transmit and receive angular resolution respectively. The echosounder's nominal frequency range is from 40 to 100 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter at CSIRO. There are 26 files totalling 1.24 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format are corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data has had outliers removed. Processed line data are available in *.gsf and ascii format, and processed bathymetry and backscatter grids in geotiff format. The EM710 MKII provides a 0.5° by 1° transmit and receive angular resolution respectively. The echosounder's nominal frequency range is from 40 to 100 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at CSIRO. There are 45 files totalling 4.06 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format are corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections [were/were not] applied to the processed data. Processed data has had outliers removed. Processed line data are available in *.gsf and ascii format, and processed bathymetry and backscatter grids in geotiff format. Seabird and incidental cetacean and seal sightings were recorded during daylight hours during the moorings deployment at the SOTS site, southwest of Tasmania, March 2017. Observations were made every ten minutes in the forward quadrant. There were 1200 observations from 38 species of birds, 3 cetacean species and one seal. The commonest bird species were Puffinus tenuirostris and Pachyptila turtur. Each species has been linked where possible to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS https://www.marinespecies.org). The data has been published to the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS https://obis.org).
