This record describes biological samples collected from the Marine National Facility RV Investigator Voyage IN2015_V03 Titled: "Submesoscale processes – billows and eddies - along the productive shelf by the East Australian Current". The voyage took place between 3rd and 18th June, 2015 departing Brisbane (QLD) and arriving in Sydney (NSW). EZ net zooplankton and micronekton samples were collected in the top 0-500 m or 0-100 m water column. Half was size fractionated and size fractions dried for the biomass spectra reconstruction and stable isotope measurements; remaining half of the sample was preserved in the 4% seawater formaldehyde solution for subsequent laboratory taxonomic analyses. Both dried and preserved samples are taken by Prof. E.A. Pakhomov to the University of the British Columbia for subsequent analyses. A total of 63 samples were fixed in formalin, 1020 dried samples, 30 stations.

The Huon Estuary Study was undertaken by CSIRO Marine Research between 1996 and 1998. The Huon Estuary is in South Eastern Tasmania. This record references the optical absorption data from both the spatial (HES) and the weekly monitoring (CM) surveys of the Huon Estuary Study. This dataset includes phytoplankton, spectral absorption and HPLC pigments. Final data for the pigment and phytoplankton data has been stored within the HES database which has been refered to by metadata record 'Huon Estuary Study 1996/1998 - Database'. The final datasets have also been written to cdrom as text files for archiving purposes by the Data Centre, Hobart. The spectral absortion data is scheduled to be reworked and will be added to the archive when it becomes available.
Biological data collected by FV Rehua during the transit from NZ to Devonport. Samples were collected with MIDOC net fitted to commercial trawl nets. In June 2009 scientific sampling of the Tasman Sea micronekton was carried out from a 65 metre factory freezer vessel, the FV Rehua, The voyage took place from Nelson New Zealand on the 17th 2009 June arriving in Devonport (Tasmania), Australia on the 22th June 2009. During the five day transit the vessel was under charter from Petuna Sealord to CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research for a total of 24 hrs. The charter time was approximately divided into eight three-hour deep-water deployments that formed three sets of day/night experiments. Three main sampling instruments were used: (1) Sampling of micronekton (primarily biota < 20 cm) was made from 1000 m depth to the surface in 5 sets of equally spaced (200 metre) strata using a fine-mesh multiple opening closing net system (MIDOC). This system was fitted to either the vessel's midwater or demersal commercial net. (2) The digitised return signal from the vessel's 38 kHz Simrad ES60 echosounder was logged for the duration of the voyage. This will allow us to map the along-transect acoustic reflectivity at 38 kHz of the Tasman Sea basin from the surface down to 1500 metres. (3) An Acoustic-Optically System (AOS) was attached to the headline of the demersal net to measure the acoustic reflectivity of individual biota at two frequencies (38 and 120 kHz) and record concurrent optical images using digital SLR still cameras and PAL video system. The AOS was deployed vertically down to 1000 metres depths on two occasions. On four occasions it was attached to the headline of the demersal net that had been fitted with the MIDOC cod-end.

This dataset contains a time-series of oceanographic data collected weekly from several stations in Storm Bay using the 14m launch FRV Scottsman from 1985 to 1990. A transect of seven stations was sampled for the first year, with the master station (station 3) sampled every week for the remainder. Samples were collected for salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, dissolved organic carbon, inorganic nutrients, organic nutrients, phytoplankton biomass, zooplankton biomass and species composition in two size fractions (200 and 37 micrometres). Data was supplied by Lesley Clementson for total and dissolved nutrients and chlorophyll data. see data link. The hydrology data are stored on-line as part of the CMR hydrology archive in Hobart. This data including nutrients is available via the Data Trawler. See data links. Additional data exists only as 4 boxes of computer printouts. These boxes are listed in TRIM records: AB2010/392; AB2010/393; AB2010/394; AB2010/395.
