Benthic water quality measurements were obtained from nine sites across and outside Marmion Lagoon at varying depths (3m, 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 25m, 30m, 35m and 40m). Data was collected on Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Particulate Organic Matter (POM), Particulate Inorganic Matter(PIM), Chlorophyll-a, Phaeopigments, HPLC, Fatty acids, Nutrient Concentrations and Isotopes over December 2008 to March 2009.
This record describes the sediment data collected from the Marine National Facility RV Investigator Event Voyage IN2015_E02, departing Hobart on the 7th April and returning to Hobart on the 14th April, 2015. The primary voyage objective was to deploy a specific sub-set of sampling equipment related to benthic biology, to establish processes, procedures and work flows in places such as the rear deck and sample processing laboratories. The primary equipment trialled was the MNF Deep Tow Camera, MNF Beam trawl, MNF Benthic (Sherman) Sled, and MNF Smith-McIntyre Grab, and the CSIRO-supplied Integrated Corer Platform (ICP), DeepBRUVs lander, and fishing dropline. The Integrated Coring Platform ( ICP) combines a number of technologies to maximise sampling in a single deployment. The ICP is built around a 6 barrel corer (KC, Denmark) and together with its central electronics module integrates cameras (cable, seafloor and corer views), CTD (SBE37IDO), altimeter, 120KHz scientific echo-sounders, Niskin bottles and hydrocarbon sensor suite. Sensor data is delivered in real time to the surface via fibre optic deployment cable. Video data from the ICP cameras includes imagery of seafloor types and mid-water biota during the up/down casts, refer to related marlin record for video data access. This metadata record describes the sediment collection using the grab and ICP taken inside the Huon Commonwealth Marine Reserve at 5 depth strata (100m, 200m, 500m, 1000m and 2000m) and on Patience seamount. Sediment samples were collected for chemical (CSIRO Energy), grainsize and composition (SARDI) analyses; surface water was also collected for PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ) analysis by NMI (National Measurements Institute). Bulk samples of sediments were elutriated for macrofauna analysis (University of Adelaide).
Ecosystem process measurements were made on sediment sampled with a box core and water sampled from CTD profiles. For sediments, measurements were of wet/dry weight ratio, total organic carbon, chlorophyll and stable isotopes, nitrogen cycling (nitrogen fixation and denitirification) and oxygen demand. For water samples, measurements were of total suspended solids, chlorophyll and stable isotopes. The survey design was a natural experiment (i.e. control-impact, but not before-after) to test the long-term, broadscale effects of prawn fishing on non-target species and habitats. Deployments were stratified by fishing intensity (three strata) and day/night. The survey was repeated in three regions: (a) north of Groote Eylandt, (b) north-east of the Vanderlins, and (c) north of Mornington Island.
Regular monthly water sampling is undertaken at the nine National Reference Stations, part of the Australian National Mooring Network, around the Australian coastline. The main goals of the project are to: 1. Provide a record of physical, chemical and biological (plankton) changes in Australian coastal waters. 2. Record data as part of a larger comprehensive national dataset, comprising both continuous in-situ sampling and analysis of discrete physical, chemical and biological samples collected monthly. The project was funded by the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and falls within the Coastal Monitoring Network Facility. Data storage and access is planned to be interoperable with other national and international programs through the IMOS Infrastructure. This record describes the End of Voyage archive from the Marine National Facility (MNF) RV Investigator voyage IN2015_V01 titled "IMOS Southern Ocean Time Series Automated Moorings for Climate and Carbon Cycle Studies Southwest of Tasmania". This was the first research voyage for the RV Investigator. The voyage took place between the 21st and the 30th of March, 2015 (local time) departing from Hobart and sailing to the south-west of Tasmania (47 S, 142 E) and returning to Hobart. Routine data collected included Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) (75, 150 KHz), Underway (UWY), SST Radiometer, CTD, Hydrology, Atmospheric data including aerosol properties, particulates and composition, ozone and radon, Greenhouse gases data, Underway pCO2, Echosounders (38, 70, 120, 200, 333 KHz), Multibeam (EM122, EM710, ME70 and SBP120) and XBT. Additional atmospheric instruments used on this voyage included two Condensation Particle Counters (CPC), Time of Flight Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ToF-ACSM), Cloud Radar BASTA 95GHz, Cloud Condensation Nuclei Counter (CCN), Long Scanning Mobility Particle Size (longSMPS), Nano Scanning Mobility Particle Size (nanoSMPS), Old Scanning Mobility Particle Size (Old SMPS), Neutral Cluster Air Ion Spectrometer (NAIS), Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS), Volatile Organic Chemical Sequencer (VOC) and Mercury Vapour Analyser (Tekran unit). Three CTD casts to 2250m with temperature, salinity, oxygen, phytoplankton fluorescence, particle backscatter, and beam attenuation sensors were sampled at 24 depths for the analyses of nutrients, salinity, Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC), alkalinity and dissolved oxygen. The top 6 depths (to 150m) were also analysed for particulate organic carbon and pigments. Additional underway samples were collected for particulate organic carbon, biogenic silica, spectroscopic and pigment analyses. The towed undulating CTD (TRIAXUS) with the ECO Triplet optical sensor, Laser Optical Plankton Counter (LOPC) and the newly mounted Submersible Ultraviolet Nitrate Analyser (SUNA) and Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation (FIRe) instruments was deployed. The SAZ-16 sediment trap mooring deployed in May 2013 was recovered. Three moorings for recovery in April 2016 were deployed: SOFS-5 air-sea flux, Pulse-11 biogeochemistry and the SAZ-17 sediment trap mooring. Three profiling floats were deployed: the Argo Hull 638i and Southern Ocean Carbon Cycling Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) ID8514 and ID9315. The EOV paper documentation - Multibeam (EM122, EM710 and ME70 and SBP120), CTD and XBT logs were scanned, archived and entered in the records management system TRIM, reference "in2015_V01". ELOG files were generated as csv formatted files and archived. The TRIAXUS log book entries have been scanned and archived. All voyage documentation is archived c/o the Data Centre in Hobart available electronically to MNF support via the local network folder "global_docs". Access to voyage documentation for non CSIRO participants can be made via DataLibrariansOAMNF@csiro.au.
