This dataset comprises hydrological and plankton data collected on Derwent Hunter Voyage DH 6/56 in the Tasman Sea, between December 1956 and February 1957. The dataset contains measurements of temperature, chlorinity, dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus at 20 stations in vertical sections to maximum depths ranging from 200 to 1500m, surface wind data, comments on zooplankton species composition and abundance (copepods and salps) studied at 12 stations, and phytoplankton (diatoms and dinoflagellates) from 11 stations. There are also brief comments about tuna catches. The hydrology data are published in CSIRO's "Oceanographical Station List" series, and discussed in Division of Fisheries & Oceanography Report no. 12, where the cruise track and the biological data are given.
Composite sea surface temperature (SST) images derived from NOAA AVHRR satellite data received in Hobart, covering Tasmania and surrounding region, for comparison with, and extrapolation of, actual measurements recorded during four voyages of FRV "Southern Surveyor" over the period July 1991-April 1993 for the Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics project. The SST images are averaged by month over a slightly longer period (January 1991-December 1993). There are also 4 higher resolution images corresponding to the times of the actual voyages, taken on 13 July 1991, 20-22 Feb 1992, 6-7 Nov 1992 and 20-26 Apr 1993. The images are composites from an original dataset of c3000 images over this period, held in the Remote Sensing Facility in Hobart.
This dataset comprises hydrological, biological and plankton data collected on Derwent Hunter Voyage DH 4/56. The voyage took place in the Bass Strait in October-November 1956. Samples of barracouta were taken for analysis of gut contents, and supplemented by data from fish caught by commercial fishermen over the same period. These were then compared with distribution data on krill (Nyctyphanes australis) and other zooplankton, principaly the copepod Calanus helgolandicus. Water masses were identified by associated hydrological sampling, comprising depth profiles of temperature, chlorinity, salinity, dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus. The hydrology data are published in CSIRO's "Oceanographical Station List" series, and the cruise track and the biological data are given in Division of Fisheries & Oceanography Report no. 5.
