This record describes PSA (Particle Size Analysis) data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. PSA data were obtained from Niskin bottle samples at a range of depths (surface to 1500 meters) on 4 cruises of FRV "Southern Surveyor" on three 60 km transects across the continental shelf to the south and south-east of Tasmania in July 1991 (cruise SS 02/91), February 1992 (cruise SS 01/92), November 1992 (cruise SS 04/92) and April 1993 (cruise SS 03/93). Analyses were later used to also derive approximate measurements of particulate carbon in the water column.
This record describes Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. PAR data were obtained from an irradiance sensor lowered through the water shortly after completing a CTD cast from which chlorophyll and productivity samples were taken, at a range of depths (surface to 1500 meters) on 4 cruises of FRV "Southern Surveyor" on three 60 km transects across the continental shelf to the south and south-east of Tasmania in July 1991 (cruise SS 02/91), February 1992 (cruise SS 01/92), November 1992 (cruise SS 04/92) and April 1993 (cruise SS 03/93).
This record describes the dissolved oxygen data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. Samples for Dissolved Oxygen were taken from Niskin bottle samples at a range of depths (surface to 1500 meters) on 4 cruises of FRV "Southern Surveyor" on three 60 km transects across the continental shelf to the south and south-east of Tasmania in July 1991 (cruise SS 02/91), February 1992 (cruise SS 01/92), November 1992 (cruise SS 04/92) and April 1993 (cruise SS 03/93).
This data set contains Simrad EK500 single beam echosounder data at 38 and 120 kHz and Simrad EA500 single beam echosounder data at 12 kHz from the Southern Surveyor. The EK500 data is primarily for water column characterisation (fish stocks, microplankton distribution) and on occasions for seabed classification (particularly prior to the EM300 swath mapper being installed), while the EA500 data is primarily for bathymetric readings.
This record describes fluorescence data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. The data were obtained from an SeaTech fluorometer lowered through the water shortly after completing a CTD cast from which chlorophyll and productivity samples were taken, at a range of depths (surface to 1500 meters) on 4 cruises of FRV "Southern Surveyor" on three 60 km transects across the continental shelf to the south and south-east of Tasmania in July 1991 (cruise SS 02/91), February 1992 (cruise SS 01/92), November 1992 (cruise SS 04/92) and April 1993 (cruise SS 03/93).
This record describes chlorophyll data collected as part of the 1991-1993 Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics Study undertaken by CSIRO Division of Fisheries. Chlorophyll data were obtained from analyses of filters from Niskin bottle samples at a range of depths (surface to 1500 meters) on 4 cruises of FRV "Southern Surveyor" on three 60 km transects across the continental shelf to the south and south-east of Tasmania in July 1991 (cruise SS 02/91), February 1992 (cruise SS 01/92), November 1992 (cruise SS 04/92) and April 1993 (cruise SS 03/93). Analyses were carried out using spectrophotometric methods (cruise SS 01/92) and HPLC (3 remaining cruises), and analysed for chlorophylls a, b and c to give estimates of algal biomass in the water.
This dataset contains the processed Hydrology (HYD) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 01/92. The voyage took place in waters off southern Tasmania during 4-25 February 1992. This dataset has been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage and/or the data processing report (as available). Southern Surveyor on-voyage hydrology data are typically obtained from water samples collected in Niskin bottles at various depths during each CTD cast. Parameters measured normally comprise temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, silicate, and nitrite.
This dataset contains the processed Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 01/92.
Composite sea surface temperature (SST) images derived from NOAA AVHRR satellite data received in Hobart, covering Tasmania and surrounding region, for comparison with, and extrapolation of, actual measurements recorded during four voyages of FRV "Southern Surveyor" over the period July 1991-April 1993 for the Tasmanian Slope Trophodynamics project. The SST images are averaged by month over a slightly longer period (January 1991-December 1993). There are also 4 higher resolution images corresponding to the times of the actual voyages, taken on 13 July 1991, 20-22 Feb 1992, 6-7 Nov 1992 and 20-26 Apr 1993. The images are composites from an original dataset of c3000 images over this period, held in the Remote Sensing Facility in Hobart.
