  • This record describes multibeam echosounder data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03, 'Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170° W from the ice edge to the equator', which departed Hobart on the 26 April 2016 and returned to Lautoka, Fiji on the 30 June 2016. There was a port call at Wellington, New Zealand, 26 - 27 May for some science personnel change; this resulted in two "legs" of the voyage therefore Leg 1 is 26 April - 26 May 2016, and Leg 2 27 May - 30 June 2016. The Kongsberg EM710 MKII multibeam echosounder was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry and backscatter information. The EM710 provides a 0.5° by 1° transmit and receive angular resolution respectively. The echosounder's nominal frequency range is from 40 to 100 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter at CSIRO. There are 46 files totalling 5.51 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format is corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data has had outliers removed. Processed line data is available in *.gsf and ascii format and processed bathymetry grids in geotiff format.   • This record describes gravity data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03, 'Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170° W from the ice edge to the equator', which departed Hobart on the 26 April 2016 and returned to Lautoka, Fiji on the 30 June 2016. The gravity meter instrument is a MicroG Lacoste Air-Sea II. Data are stored in .ENV and .DAT data files at CSIRO. There are 117 files totalling 397 MB of raw data in this dataset. S wharf tie was undertaken at Aetoa Quay in Wellington using a Scintrex Autograv CG-5. Wharf tie data can be found in Aetoa_Quay_New_Zealand 25 May 2016.TXT, which is stored with the raw data.   • This record describes expendable bathythermograph, XBT, data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03, 'Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170° W from the ice edge to the equator', which departed Hobart on the 26 April 2016 and returned to Lautoka, Fiji on the 30 June 2016. There was a port call at Wellington, New Zealand, 26 - 27 May for some science personnel change; this resulted in two "legs" of the voyage therefore Leg 1 is 26 April - 26 May 2016, and Leg 2 27 May - 30 June 2016. The ship XBT system as well as Bec Cowley's wireless XBT system were used to collect multiple XBT drops at CTD deployments for data comparisons. A total of 147 XBT casts were conducted over the duration of this voyage on the ship XBT system. Data are stored in netCDF files at CSIRO. The Kongsberg EM122 multibeam echosounder was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry and backscatter information on both legs and watercolumn backscatter information on Leg 2. The EM122 provides a 1 degree by 1 degree angular resolution. The echosounder's nominal frequency is 12 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at CSIRO. There are 2516 files totalling 75.6 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format is corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data had outliers removed. Processed line data are available in *.gsf and ascii format, and processed bathymetry grids in geotiff format.   • This record describes scientific split-beam echosounder data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03, 'Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170° W from the ice edge to the equator', which departed Hobart on the 26 April 2016 and returned to Lautoka, Fiji on the 30 June 2016. There was a port call at Wellington, New Zealand, 26 - 27 May for some science personnel change; this resulted in two "legs" of the voyage therefore Leg 1 is 26 April - 26 May 2016, and Leg 2 27 May - 30 June 2016. During Leg 1 the EK60 was predominately set to passive on all frequencies except for the 18 kHz which was run to full ocean depth as redundancy to the EM122 depth for CTD casts. The EK60 was also turned on with each individual frequency during transit to thoroughly test the interaction between the individual frequencies of EK60 and each of the ADCP’s. The EK60 was not run at all on Leg 2 as it was thought that it could cause interference with the ADCP data. Data are stored in *.raw, *.bot and *.idx format at CSIRO. There are 1494 files totalling 63.1 GB of raw data in this dataset. No processing has been conducted on this data.   • This record describes the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data collected from the Marine National Facility RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03, titled: "Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170oW from the ice edge to the equator." The voyage took place between April 26 and June 30, 2016 departing Hobart (TAS) and returning to Lautoka (Fiji). Data was collected during in2016_v03 for the duration of the voyage. Data was collected using VMDAS and post-processed using CODAS. See the voyage computing and electronics report for more details regarding data acquisition. Data was processed by Jules Hummon from University of Hawaii. This submitted dataset is unchanged from earlier versions. This dataset was processed and then archived within the CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere (O&A) Information and Data Centre (IDC) in Hobart.

  • This record describes the Underway (UWY) data collected from the Marine National Facility (MNF) RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03 Titled: "Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170W from the ice edge to the equator ". The voyage took place between the 26th April to 30th of June, 2016 departing Hobart and arriving in Lautoka (Fiji). The voyage comprises of two Legs: Leg-1: Hobart to Wellington (NZ) from 26 April to 26 May 2016 Leg-2: Wellington to Lautoka (Fiji) from 27 May to 30 June 2016 Standard Underway data is continuously recorded, it consists of: (1) NAV: Navigation data: (dual GPS) Latitude, Longitude, Speed, Heading, course over ground, Gyros, and Doppler Log. (2) TSG: Thermosalinograph: Water Salinity, flow-rate, Temperature, Fluorescence, and pCO2. (3) MET: Atmospheric (port and starboard): Humidity, Wind speed and direction (vane and ultrasonic), Radiometer, Pyranometer, PAR, Air temperature, Air pressure, Rain, Ozone and Trace gases. Data are recorded at 5 second intervals. Near real-time data is available via the link below. This dataset will be processed and archived within the CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere Data Centre in Hobart. Data is available in 5sec intervals in NetCDF, 10 sec and 5 min intervals in ascii format.   • This record describes HPLC pigment data collected from the Marine National Facility (MNF) RV Investigator voyage: IN2016_v03, titled "Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170 W from the ice edge to the equator." The voyage consisted of two legs: Leg-1 from Hobart (TAS) to Wellington (NZ) between April 27 and May 26, and Leg-2 from Wellington (NZ) to Lautoka (Fiji) from May 27 to June 28, 2016. The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation. Parameters measured are the concentration of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments. Samples for phytoplankton pigment analysis were collected using 2 x filtration racks and vacuum pumps (dimensions filtration rack: H:60cm, W:20cm; L: 50cm + 2 pumps H:20cm, W:20cm; L: 20cm). Samples for chlorophyll a were collected using one filtration pump (dimensions: H:60cm, W:60cm; L: 60 cm).

  • This record describes the Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) data collected from the Marine National Facility RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V03, titled: "Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170o W from the ice edge to the equator." The voyage took place between April 26 and June 30, 2016 departing from Hobart (TAS) and arriving in Lautoka (Fiji). Data for 141 deployments were acquired using the Seabird SBE911 CTD 20, fitted with 36 twelve litre bottles on the rosette sampler. CSIRO supplied calibrations were applied to the temperature, conductivity, oxygen, and pressure data. The data were subjected to automated QC to remove spikes and out-of-range values. The final conductivity calibration is based on multiple deployment groupings, due to sensor and deck box changes. Processing was performed on each unique sensor configuration in order to best account for the individual characteristics of each sensor. The final calibration from the primary sensor for casts 1-7 had a standard deviation (S.D) of 0.00088 PSU, a S.D of 0.00117 for casts 8-46, and S.D of 0.00114 for casts 47-141, well within our target of ‘better than 0.002 PSU’. The standard product of 1 dbar binned averaged were produced using data from the primary temperature and conductivity sensors, and the secondary Oxygen sensor. Similarly, the dissolved oxygen data were calibrated in groups of deployments due to sensor changes. The agreement between the CTD and bottle data was good. A Fluorometer, Transmissometer, and altimeter were also installed and logged on the auxiliary A/D channels of the CTD. The collected data were subsequently processed and archived within the CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere (O&A) Information and Data Centre (IDC) in Hobart.   • This record describes Hydrology (HYD) data collected from the Marine National Facility (MNF) RV Investigator voyage: in2016_v03, titled "Monitoring Ocean Change and Variability along 170 W from the ice edge to the equator." The voyage consisted of two legs: Leg-1 from Hobart (TAS) to Wellington (NZ) between April 27 and May 26 and Leg-2 from Wellington (NZ) to Lautoka (Fiji) from May 27 to June 28, 2016. Hydrology samples were collected from Niskin bottles sampled at various depths during a Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) deployment. Parameters analysed were salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, silicate, nitrate plus nitrite and ammonium. Underway samples were also collected every 12 hours (or once every 24 if a CTD coincided with collection time) for nutrient analysis from the underway system which collects water from 7 m depth and is not filtered. This dataset has been archived at the CSIRO O&A Information and Data Centre (IDC) in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the Voyage Report and Data Processing Report.
