This dataset contains geoscientific data logged during SHAARC cruise (FR04/00) on RV Franklin 5-24.5.2000 in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. These data include logged station coordinates and information for dredges, sediment grabs and cores, CTD/hydrocasts and echosounder operations. The SHAARC research team conducted a multi-disciplinary investigation (volcanology, petrology, geochemistry and economic geology) of submarine volcanic-hydrothermal systems in island arc regions of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The team carried out 3 primary scientific activities: (i) Volcanology/Petrology (ii) Hydrothermal Deposits/Geochemistry (iii) Marine Chemistry/Hydrothermal Fluids Although volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity on mid-ocean ridges (MOR) and some back-arc basins have been the focus of many detailed studies over the past decade, only a few submarine arcs and fore-arc regions have received much attention. FR04/00 investigations of the New Ireland-Solomon Islands convergent margin will generate a better understanding of the fundamental geological processes of submarine arc volcanism, including hydrothermal activity and the formation of economic concentrations of ore minerals. These data will be compared to and contrasted with hydrothermal activity occurring at divergent plate boundary volcanism.

  • This dataset contains ONLY RAW Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) data files. These data were collected on Franklin voyage FR 04/2000. No hydrology data samples were taken during this voyage and hence the data cannot be calibrated. This dataset has NOT been processed and the raw files are only available on request.

  • This dataset contains the processed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data collected on Franklin voyage FR 04/2000. The voyage took place in New Britain, Bougainville and Solomon Islands during May 2000. This dataset has been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage and/or the data processing report (as available).

  • This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on Franklin voyage FR 04/2000. The voyage took place in New Britain, Bougainville and Solomon Islands during May 2000. This dataset has been processed and archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage and/or the data processing report (as available). The standard Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from a research voyage includes Navigation (NAV), Sounder, Thermosalinograph (TSG) and Meteorological (MET) data. NAV data includes GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements of latitude, longitude, ship's direction and speed. MET data includes atmospheric temperature, humidity and pressure, wind speed and direction, and incident radiation intensity. Data are recorded at or averaged over 5 minute intervals.
