CSIRO holds hard copies of longline data (in Japanese) from two Fisheries High Schools: Misaki Fisheries High School, 1969–2000; Shonan Maru (570 pp). Sakai Fishery High School, 1969–1997; Wakatori Maru (324 pp). These reports were provided by the Tokyo University of Fisheries library, where they appear under the titles Josen Jisshu Hokokusho Shonan Maru and Josen Jisshu Hokokusho Wakatori Maru in OPAC. The information contained in these reports relates to the operation of tuna longlines, and includes fishing effort, oceanography and catch composition, and is reported by individual set. Shark are reported only as a general category in both these data sets. The Shonan Maru appeared to make several voyages each year of 1–2 months duration. Examples of translation sheets are included with the hard copies.
This dataset stores information on the diet of pelagic fishes (tuna and swordfish). The samples and data have been collected seasonally from various sources (fishers on commercial, recreational and chartered vessels as well as CSIRO staff and observers) since 1992. Keywords: Stomach contents, diet, tuna, swordfish.
The CSIRO hard parts archive comprises collections of otoliths, vertebrae, scales and fin spines from tuna and billfish species, and a supporting database. The archives are a resource for research on age and growth, migration, stock structure and physiology. The specimens have been collected from large pelagic species including southern bluefin tuna (SBT), yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, albacore tuna and broadbill swordfish. By 2011, SBT otoliths in the collection numbered 31,416. The physical archives are located at CMAR in Hobart. Associated with the archive is a database containing: - The catch and specimen data related to the hard parts samples. - The results of research using the hard parts including historical and ongoing age and growth studies and otolith chemistry projects. - A link to the Tag Database that holds information on the tagging of the same species.
This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 031. The data were obtained from the Great Australian Bight in February 1978. Data were obtained from acoustic and trawl surveys of the general fish fauna of the western Great Australian Bight including Trachurus declivis and Thunnus maccoyii. A number of specimens of the Sea Trumpeter (Therapon humeralis) were taken by hand line in East Esperance Bay. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise summary for this voyage.(derived from the cruise report) - Biological Field Data Sheets recorded during this voyage have been scanned to PDF, and are available (to CSIRO Staff) on-line. See the details link under "Stored Media List" (below).
This dataset comprises tuna catch, hydrological and plankton data collected on Derwent Hunter Voyage DH 3/56. The voyage took place off the New South Wales coast in September-October 1956. Catches of southern bluefin, albacore and big-eye tuna were recorded and compared with hydrological station data and distribution of zooplankton (21 copepod and 2 salp species). Sea surface dynamic heights were also measured at 7 stations. The hydrology data are published in CSIRO's "Oceanographical Station List" series, and the cruise track and the biological data are given in Division of Fisheries & Oceanography Report no. 5.
This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 02/92. This cruise took place in oceanic and shelf waters off south eastern Tasmania during 26 May - 18 June 1992, under the leadership of Jock Young. Biological data collected on this cruise include midwater and demersal fish from the jarosite dumpsite, and from control sites to the north and east, for heavy metal analysis. Orange roughy from along the 1000 m contour inshore of the dumpsite for heavy metal analysis. Samples collected from trawls for species composition and day/night vertical distribution of the main zooplankton and midwater fishes associated with the dumpsite. Midwater fish and plankton samples from the tuna longline fishing grounds to determine the species composition and to study the biological production in these waters. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.
This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 048. The data were obtained from the Great Australian Bight and off SW Western Australia in April 1979. Four hydrological transects and two XBT transects were carried out. Trawls for pelagic fish were made and the species caught included Pilchard (Sardinops sagax), bonito (Sarda orientalis), Southern Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus maccoyi) and Blue Mackerel (Scomber australasicus).(derived from the cruise report) - Biological Field Data Sheets recorded during this voyage have been scanned to PDF, and are available (to CSIRO Staff) on-line. See the details link under "Stored Media List" (below).
This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 047. The data were obtained from the Great Australian Bight in March and April 1979. Data were obtained from acoustic and trawl surveys of pelagic and demersal fish. New species distributions were obtained for fish including the footballer sweep (Neatypus obliquus), stargazer (Pleuroscopus psuedodorsalis), and various myctophids. Four species from trolling included Bonito (Sarda orientalis), Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyi), Albacore (Thunnus alalunga) and Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). Length, numbers, weight and target signal strength were determined. Selected species of sponges were kept for taxonomic studies. Plankton observations were made in connection with studies of the distribution of pilchard (Sardinops neopilchardus).
This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 039. The data were obtained from the NSW coast and Tasman Sea in October 1978. Data were obtained on distribution (sightings and sonar) of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii). Associated data collected included seabird species composition and spatial distribution, plankton samples, XBT, zooplankton and hydrological samples, and water colour.
This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 01/98. This cruise took place in the Great Australian Bight during February 1998, under the leadership of Jock Young. Biological data collected on this cruise include acoustic data on southern bluefin tuna (SBT) schools and their pelagic prey, collection of stomach samples from commercially-caught SBT, and photography of bottom features with an underwater camera. Surface net sampling was also undertaken for phyllosoma larvae of southern rock lobsters. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.
