This data set contains Simrad EK500 single beam echosounder data at 38 and 120 kHz and Simrad EA500 single beam echosounder data at 12 kHz from the Southern Surveyor. The EK500 data is primarily for water column characterisation (fish stocks, microplankton distribution) and on occasions for seabed classification (particularly prior to the EM300 swath mapper being installed), while the EA500 data is primarily for bathymetric readings.

This dataset contains the processed Hydrology (HYD) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 01/95, a part of the JGOFS Southern Ocean Processes study. The voyage took place in the Southern Ocean during 14 January - 2 February 1995. This dataset has been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage and/or the data processing report (as available). Southern Surveyor on-voyage hydrology data are typically obtained from water samples collected in Niskin bottles at various depths during each CTD cast. Parameters measured normally comprise temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, silicate, and nitrite.

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 01/95, a part of the JGOFS Southern Ocean Processes study. This cruise took place in the Southern Ocean during 14 January - 2 February 1995, under the leadership of Brian Griffiths. Biological data collected on this cruise include measurements of in-situ optical properties, including spectral absorption and upwelling and down-welling spectral irradiance in the sub-tropical convergence zone (STCZ). Samples for pigment analysis, in-situ zooplankton grazing, samples from sediment traps, zooplankton and phytoplankton samples. Measurements of chlorophyll-a and other pigments, primary production, cyanobacteria, and lipids. Isotopic composition of phytoplankton carbon and nitrogen. Acoustic data to describe the distribution and movement of biological organisms. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.

  • This data was collected on Research Vessel Southern Surveyor, cruise SS 01/95. The voyage departed Hobart, Tasmania on the 14th of January, 1995 and returned to Hobart, Tasmania on the 12th of February, 1995. Samples were collected from 43 stations in order to characterise the optical properties of the Southern Ocean, south and west of Tasmania. Parameters measured include the phytoplankton pigment concentration and composition. The data can be used for Ocean Colour sensor validation.

  • This dataset contains the photosynthetic parameters determined experimentally from Productivity vs Light intensity experients (P vs E experiments), and primary production calculated using these parameters, collected on the Southern Surveyor south of Tasmania during the Aerosol Characterisation Experiment (ACE-1) south of Tasmania in January-February 1995. This dataset is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage and/or the references. The data set consists of photosynthetic parameters and modelled column primary production froms sites in subtropical, subantarctic and polar waters south of Tasmania. Experimental field data and documentation links were added in April 2014 (see below).

This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 01/95, a part of the JGOFS Southern Ocean Processes study. The voyage took place in the Southern Ocean during 14 January - 2 February 1995. This dataset has NOT been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage. The standard Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from a research voyage includes Navigation (NAV), Sounder, Thermosalinograph (TSG) and Meteorological (MET) data. NAV data includes GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements of latitude, longitude, ship's direction and speed. MET data includes atmospheric temperature, humidity and pressure, wind speed and direction, and incident radiation intensity. Data are recorded at or averaged over 1 minute intervals.
