Fish Bycatch samples were collected for CSIRO from trawls between March and December 1983.These trawls were part of a 12 month survey of the tiger prawn fishery of southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria carried out by Queensland Department of Primary Industry. The vessels involved were the 'Gwendolyn May' and Shirley Ross' which fished each month for four nights on either side of the new moon, using 6-fathom nets (Florida Flyers, with a Texas drop chain rig) with a cod-end mesh of 45 mm. This data was then used to compare demersal fish community with that found from Munro's 1962-65 data (Poiner and Harris 1986).
This database, named "Biodata", contains biological and station data from cruises of Divisional research vessels "Courageous" and "Soela" between February 1978 and April 1989, and also some data from "Sprightly" for the period August 1979-May 1980, and the chartered vessel "Jacqueline D" from August 1986-November 1988 in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria. The data were originally stored within a special section of the AFZIS (Australian Fishing Zone Information System) database in Canberra, developed jointly by CSIRO Division of Fisheries Research and Department of Primary Industry (DPI), and were retrieved before the DPI Cyber computer was decommissioned. Data from Soela cruises for 1985, 1986, and the first 6 cruises of 1987 are not represented in this dataset. Information held comprises vessel, cruise and station identifiers, and details for 3,000 (+) operations including date, time, latitude, longitude, operation type, gear type, trawl details, surface temperature and salinity where measured, fishing effort and catch by species, and length-frequency data where recorded. The data are presently in an Oracle database in Hobart.
Focussed habitat re-sampling of macrohabitats (defined by bottom type, soft hard or rough) in three mesohabitats (key study areas presenting a variety of shelf habitats described by fishers) using gillnets and traps from a commercial vessel. Gillnets were deployed and retrieved at dawn and dusk giving near equal day/night soaking times. 19 deployments yielded 6,457 fish and squid weighing nearly 4 t. Fish and crab traps were set during the day only, yielding 979 fish specimens (589 kg) and squids and hermit crabs weighing 673 kg in total.
This was originally a compilation dataset containing all vessel-collected and centrally held biological data from CMR voyages forming part of the 1982-1997 "North West Shelf Study". The data were extracted from the master North West Shelf Database (as described by R. Campbell, 1984 unpublished, with additional data from 1995 and 1997) for the use of the NWS Joint Environmental Management Study, and have been subject to additional maintenance with some new information added by Xi He's group. This version of the data is a copy of the MS Access files held by Xi's group as at October 2000, with no additional quality checks. Data represented are operation, species, and length-frequency data from Soela voyages SO 5/82, SO 6/82, SO 1/83, SO 2/83, SO 3/83, SO 4/83, SO 5/83, SO 6/86, SO 7/87, SO 5/88, Pride of Eden PoE 4/89, Southern Surveyor SS 02/90, SS 04/91, SS 08/95 and SS 07/97. Biological data from other CSIRO voyages through this region but not part of this series of cruises has been extracted separately as a complementary dataset to the present one (see separate metadata record "Biological Data from CMR Research Vessels, North West Shelf, part II"). In addition to the trawl station and catch data, details of photographic stations is included along with recently compiled data from detailed analyses of the underwater photographs carried out subsequent to the original data collection. Additional information regarding individual components of this dataset is contained in separate MarLIN metadata records which exist for each voyage (e.g. "Soela Voyage SO 5/82 Biological Data Overview", etc.), and in the cruise report for each voyage. Information regarding the photographic analyses is held by Xi He's group. Access to BIODATA is now available via the Data Trawler application, please see Data link.
This was originally a compilation dataset containing all vessel-collected and centrally held biological data from CMR voyages which have passed through the North West Shelf study area (approximately the spatial extents 18 deg S, 23 deg S, 112 deg E, 120 deg E), additional to those represented in the "North West Shelf Database" (see separate metadata record). The data were extracted from the CMR Data Centre's "BIODATA" database (see separate metadata record) for the use of the NWS Joint Environmental Management Study. Data represented are operation, species, and length-frequency data from Courageous voyages Cour 034, Cour 035, Cour 036, Cour 049 and Cour 052 (1978-1979), and Soela voyages SO 1/79, SO 4/80, SO 5/80, SO 7/80, SO 2/82, SO 4/82, and SO 1/84. Additional information regarding individual components of this dataset is contained in separate MarLIN metadata records which exist for each voyage (e.g. "Soela Voyage SO 1/79 Biological Data Overview", etc.), and in the cruise report for each voyage. Access to BIODATA is now available via the Data Trawler application, please see Data link.
This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 4/82. This cruise took place in the North West Shelf during 25 July - 23 August 1982, under the leadership of Keith Sainsbury and G. West. Biological data collected on this cruise include lobsters and prawns from prawn trawls, and fish from trawls. Samples for ageing, reproduction and gut analysis were obtained from 8 lutjanid and 4 carangid species. Approximately 80 shark samples, 200 Lethrinus nematocanthus and 100 Scolopsis regina were obtained, and squid samples when caught. Benthic invertebrate samples for the Western Australian Museum and dredge samples to augment existing data.(derived from the cruise report) - Biological data is available via Data Trawler. - Biological Field Data Sheets recorded during this voyage have been scanned to PDF, and are available on-line at http://www.marine.csiro.au/datacentre/process/data_files/BioData/log_sheet_scans/BOX_AB2009_537/BOX_AB2009_537_index.htm
This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Denebola voyage 2/80, 1/80, Soela and Courageous voyages. This cruise took place in the Great Australian Bight during 1978-1980 under the leadership of John Stevens. Blue Mackerel biological data collected in the Great Australian Bight region include age and growth data, length frequency data, summary of stomach contents. Biological Field Data Sheets recorded during this voyage have been scanned to PDF, and are made available on 13/3/2014 (to CSIRO Staff) on-line. See the details link under "Stored Media List" (below).
This record describes the datasets from Courageous Cruise 006. The data were obtained from waters off the New South Wales coast, Bass Strait and Victorian coast in February 1976. Data were obtained from acoustic and trawl surveys for jack mackerel (Trachurus declivis), pennant lantern fish (Maurolicus muelleri) and other demersal and pelagic fish species as well as pelagic crustacea, squid, myctophids, chauliodontid and paralepid. Stock size have been determined. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise summary for this voyage.(derived from the cruise report) - Biological Field Data Sheets recorded during this voyage have been scanned to PDF, and are available (to CSIRO Staff) on-line. See the details link under "Stored Media List" (below).
This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 044. The data were obtained from the NSW coast between Sydney and Shoalhaven Bight, NSW, in January 1979. Acoustic surveys and trawls for pelagic fish were conducted and the species studied included Nannygai (Centroberyx affinis), three-spined cardinal-fish (Apogonops anomalus) and southern frost-fish (Lepidopus lex). Samples of crustaceans and squid were also obtained. XBT data and continuous surface temperature were also obtained.
