Global Seagrass Species Richness - World Conservation Monitoring Centre 2003
This dataset shows the global distribution of seagrasses, and is composed of two
subsets of point and polygon occurrence data. The data were compiled by UNEP
World Conservation Monitoring Centre in collaboration with Dr Frederick T. Short
(University of New Hampshire, USA).
The boundaries do not represent actual ranges as seagrass are distributed in waters
shallow enough for sunlight to penetrate. No surface area calculations should be
attempted.

This dataset shows the global distribution of seagrass species richness. It was
created by UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, in collaboration with Dr
Frederick T. Short (University of New Hampshire, USA).
Version 2 of the dataset was an updated version of the dataset used in Green and
Short (2003).
The ranges of individual seagrass species were combined so as to produce a layer
showing the number of species present in given areas.
This dataset was developed alongside the publication by Green and Short (2003).
