RV Investigator Voyage IN2026_V03 Hydrology Data

This record describes Hydrology (HYD) data collected from the Marine National Facility (MNF) RV Investigator voyage IN2026_V03, titled: "SOTS: Southern Ocean Time Series automated moorings for climate and carbon cycle studies southwest of Tasmania." The voyage took place between May 14, 2026 and May 22, 2026 (AEST), departing from Hobart and returning to Hobart.

For this voyage, CTD samples were collected and analysed for nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and salinity by the on-board Hydrochemistry team. Please refer to Hydrochemistry output section for more detail on sample types and analyses. Carbon and alkalinity samples were also collected at selected station by chief scientist, Dr. Elizabeth Shadwick to continue the time series established during previous voyage series, with these samples to be analysed on shore by the carbon team once the voyage concludes. Additionally, Thermosalinograph (TSG) samples were continuously collected throughout the voyage, with on-board measurements of their salinity used to calibrate the ship's underway system.

This dataset has been processed (quality-controlled), and archived at the CSIRO National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI) Information and Data Centre (IDC) in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the Voyage Report and Data Processing Report.

Explanation

Completeness and Data Quality information: Salinity and dissolved oxygen data quality are good. Nutrients analysed Silicate (SiO4 4- as Si), Phosphate (PO4 3- as P), Nitrate (NO3 - as N) plus Nitrite (NO2 - as N) referred to as NOx, Nitrite (NO2 - as N) and Ammonium (NH4 + as N). Nutrient data quality is good; Japanese KANSO certified reference materials for silicate, phosphate, nitrate and nitrite in seawater (RMNS CW & CS) was included with each analysis run to determine accuracy. QA/QC Nutrient data can be found in the data processing report. All data is GO-SHIP compliant. All data completed. Missing and anomalous data is flagged and noted with explanations in the data processing report (IN2026_V03_HYD_ProcessingReport.pdf).

Statement

Data source: original field data.

Nutrient samples were analysed using segmented flow SEAL AA500 and results are in unit of µmol/L. In-house methods: SOP 001, SOP 002, SOP 003 and SOP 004 were used to analyse nutrients.

Please cite the following paper when using Hydrochemistry data for silicate, phosphate, nitrate+nitrite (NOx) and nitrite analysis:

If publishing ammonium data, please cite the following:

Rees, C., Janssens, J., Sherrin, K., Hughes, P., Tibben, S., McMahon, M., McDonald, J., Camac, A., Schwanger, C. and Marouchos, A., (2021) “Method for Reproducible Shipboard Segmented Flow Analysis Ammonium Measurement Using an In-House Reference Material for Quality Control.” Frontiers in Marine Science, 8. doi:10.3389/fmars.2021.581901

Salinity samples were analysed using Guildline 8400B Autosal Lab Salinometer and OSIL software. The salinometer was calibrated with IAPSO standard seawater P168. In-house method SOP 006 was used to analyse salinity, units are Practical Salinity Unit (PSU).

Dissolved Oxygens were analysed using Scripps UV titrator and software, units measured in mL/L and converted to µmol/L. Dissolved oxygen was analysed using in-house method SOP 005.

All data was processed with HyPro 5.9.

Nutrient data decimal places within the CSV file; silicate is 1 decimal place, nitrite is 3 decimal places and NOx (nitrate + nitrite), phosphate and ammonium is 2 decimal places. Any concentration below the detection limit, including negative values, should be referred to as zero.

Oxygen Data is displayed to 3 decimal places. Salinity data is displayed to 4 decimal places.

Any essential data processing notes and parameters are described in Hydrochemistry data process report (IN2026_V03_HYD_ProcessingReport.pdf).
